My apologies for not adding the article earlier, but here it is then:
Rising River Youth had something different planned on Sunday March the 8th, and so we climbed into Shaun’s Yaris, expecting something interesting to come!
Interesting it definitely was, and is also, in a way, linked to the name “Rising River Youth,” as we went to visit the 3 places where the evidence the recent torrential rains could be best seen: The Petrus Stroom, Midmar Dam wall, and the Howick Falls.
First up we arrived at the now-swollen banks of the Petrus Stroom, where we took a seat on a rock, and, while gazing at the river and marvelling at how the river just flattened the plants on the banks, we read a very fitting Psalm about how God’s creation reflects his glory. That was quite fitting, seeing as we were sitting right next to a heaving river!
After checking out the surroundings, we drove down to the dam wall, and wow, was that a sight! The water wasn’t just coming over the wall, it was pouring down there! We immediately decided to get closer, and so we waded through the long grass to the bridge closest to the wall. Here the noise of the water coming over the wall was deafening and we were constantly being showered with a haze of water, and we snapped away eagerly. (Alex more eagerly then the rest of us, with his high-tech SLR!)
After wading back to the car, we drove to our final stop for the outing: the Howick Falls. As with the wall, it had changed quite dramatically, and was now a raging torrent of water. (excuse the cliche but it really was!) Compared to the usual narrow trickle of water going over there, it was now a wide gushing wall of water, very spectacular! What was most amazing was the large group of people washing their clothes right by the edge of the falls! We were hoping none of them would tumble over!
That was the last stop, and so we headed back to church. All in all it was a trip to just marvel at the creation that God has blessed us with!
