What Went Down–2 May 2010

After the sessions meeting and the AGM, we’re happy to say that things are finally moving along at RRY, both planning-wise and in the garage!

Walking into the garage today was quite hectic, I must admit! I was expecting the usual view on what we’d been seeing for the past 4 months, but lo and behold, the entire place seemed new somehow! Alex had, as I found out, been at work the previous weekend, putting in some personal/upgrading touches to The Garage (as it is now officially known!) and my gosh it looks much better! A new white “ceiling” hung above my head, whilst a neat circle of chairs surrounded a new table, with a bookshelf to the side, and– a prayer nook supported by an umbrella…nice! You can check out how our garage looks now by hitting the jump to the end of this post!

What we were also planning, was, well, a planning session…so that’s what happened as well!

RRY need more youth, we don’t deny it. But this time we’re going all out to advertise and publicize our garage to as many people as we can. Alex and Juan put it well: we’re not doing this to get recognition or praise: we just want to offer a relaxed atmosphere for Christian youth to socialize with others who feel as fired up about Christ as they do. Mainly, we also want to have interactive Bible sessions, DVD topics and also trips and activities to grow all our relationships with Christ, and be a true example to God’s grace and love. So, with that in mind, we started planning where, how and when to place our ads and flyers. You can see the results of our efforts in the  below, as well as on the main page. (I’m placing a sticky post there for the time being, you can also check them out on the ABOUT page.)

What Went Down–14 March 2010

Actually, not much went down, but it was just Alex and myself, and since Alex felt we’d all been quite busy in youth recently, we sat down to take a look at the Bible software I recently got: Glo Bible. Check out their site under “Software Highlights” in “Extra Stuff” on our site.

This is a truly amazing piece of computer software, and, although requiring a fairly hefty PC to run, is well worth the effort. Everything in the software, all 3600-odd pieces of media, articles, interactive documentaries, notes and references, are cross-related and deep-zoomable: your scroll wheel on your mouse moves deeper into all the features. It really brings the Bible to life, and allows you to take virtual tours of the Holy Land as it is today, and as it was in Jesus’ time; you can really imagine Jesus living there and performing His miracles and the like!

Glo allows you to create customizeable reading plans relating to anything within the Bible, allows you to search verses and find out where they took place, when, and how these relate to your personal life with Glo’s 6 lenses: Media, Bible, Topical, MyGlo, Atlas and Timeline. For example, you find topic called “Sin” in the Topical Lens. Next you can select it and send it to the Bible lens, which will show you all the verses and sections in the Bible relating to sin. You can send it to the Timeline Lens, and all the times that Sin is mentioned in the Bible according to when it was mentioned, will display. Then you can send it to Media and see pictures and art as well as Encyclopaedia, web links and definitinos for the search. Along with it’s comprehensive study notes for NIV, Glo also features a “My Notes” sectin, allowing you to write your own notes about verses or sections in the Bible to be shown in your “MyGlo” lens.

Yes, it’s possible more expensive than some would like, (R800) huge in size (18GB, 3x 4.7GB DVD’s) and yes, it eats cap [Internet bandwidth] (400MB on first install and +- 50MB with monthly updates) and yes it needs a beefy PC (1GB RAM, Core 2 Duo Processor) but in the end it is thouroughly worth  it, and really allows you to understand the Bible, and be immersed in the world in which Jesus Himself lived. It’s not just a study resource, its a journey and an exploration, and I am thoroughly enjoying having it: highly recommended!
