What Went Down–6 September 2009

My apologies for the late post!

Today was the second of the jam sessions for the term!

We gathered in the hall around the piano and drums and Alex (on cue) pulls out a gigantic file filled to near capacity with sheet music! “Right, lets get started,” he goes. I just goggle a bit, but he then (thankfully) assures me we’ll just start by picking out a few for me to learn. 15 minutes later we are sending out some really good tunes, with Alex trying his (apparently unskilled) hands at the drum, keeping quite a good beat!

Eventually Alex photocopied these songs for us to work on at home:

  • “As the Deer”
  • “Come, Now is the Time To Worship”
  • “Abba, Father”
  • “My Life Is In You Lord”
  • “Jesus, Name Above All Names”
  • “Make Me A Channel Of Your Peace”
  • “For I’m Building A People Of Power”

We will likely have another jam session in the near future, to practise those songs, keep tuned here for updates!

What Went Down: 2 August 2009

Today, we started off with the “New Official” event planner, and hit it off with our “Jam Session.”

As we arrived we trooped off to the hall, where a drumkit, piano and amp were waiting. (since we’re still waiting for lights & a power plug for the Garage) Immediately Juan plugged his own electric guitar in and began riffing away, (He’s quite good actually!!) playing the intro’s of at least a dozen songs to refresh his memory. Meanwhile, Alex was looking at the drumkit with interest, and, because he’d always wanted to try to play (but never could) he started tapping away. That left just me and Francois; I sat down behind the piano, and Francois, well…he just made comments and song requests to Juan, who tried his best to remember some of the popular ones suggested to him.

Eventually, though, we ended up with at least 3 different beats/tunes playing, and, satisfied that we could play, we arranged to find some songs we could play together, as a “band.” We’ll carry on finding some good tunes, and probably present them at the next  ‘Jam Session.’

That was the good news…the bad news is that the TV we hauled from the hall last week doesn’t switch on…(The LED is the exception) so after much puffing and pressing we eventually gave up…that sucks!

Next week it’s contemporary service, so we’re gonna be in the main church. Catch you soon!
