What Went Down–15 August 2010

If you’d like to see the framework slideshow we discussed, click the link to download the PPT file: Love: Us vs God [clean].

Today we discussed how both the world and God sees love, and, after watching this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2LhI-RLX84 we realized that the world has a very warped idea of love, and how to deal with it.

The emotions that came through from the Eminem/Rihanna video were mostly of anger, hatred and most of all, deceit. We discussed how the world sees relationships and how to build on them, and then read this passage from 1 Corinthians about God’s views on love.

That passage was so different to what came out in the first video, a point which we chatted about, plus how we know if God is speaking to us of our relationships and how we can prevent ourselves from being taken for a ride by someone we care about; all of this is easier with God’s guidance!

Discuss the slideshow with family and friends, feel free to use it and think about the world vs God when it comes to love!

What Went Down–28 February 2010

A day late, but better late then never right?

Check out this link for our reference material: http://www.ucg.org/teenstudy/comparingreligions.htm

As we took a seat for the session today, Alex pulled out his usual wad of notes; and yes, it was religious discussion! Now I’m not going into intense discussion, because you all can check that out at the link above, but I’ll briefly touch on what we discussed:

  • There are clearly many differences between Christianity and other religions
  • The similarities that there are often boil down to the “holy figure” in the other religion having plagerised or stolen quotes from the Bible or Jesus’ words
  • Christ is indeed the only way
  • There are some odd ideas practiced in other religions
  • Every religion has its fanatics (Muslims have terrorists, (that’s not saying all Muslims by definition are terrorist though) Buddhists have their monks, and even Christians have odd cults that claim to be “the truth” and, quite frankly, are far from it!
  • You must admire one thing from some other religions: their devotion (albeit completely to the wrong god, or gods) to their deity could be something Christians can learn from when it comes to our relationship with Christ
  • In order to know better about what we believe, we also need to know what others believe so we know what we’re not believing!

And finally we were left with a thought-provoking question (see the above-linked site):

How should we respond to people who have different religious beliefs?

Think about that one too….

NOTE: there will be NO youth next week (7th March) because of the presentation by “Jews for Jesus” by a Mr. Sichsy, ONLY in the morning service, so you’re encouraged to be there!

What Went Down–7 February 2010

I seem to be constantly apologizing for late posts, so here’s another apology, this one’s for last week!

We got together today for more talk on the people of the Bible, and how they impact on our lives, as well as what lessons we can learn from them.

As you’d probably know, Elijah was a prophet, and one of only 2 people in the Bible to not die, and be “taken away” God. (The other, incidentally was Enoch, see Hebrews 11:5)

Anyhow, the worksheet will help explain the work we did, you can get all the details by reading 1 Kings 19 and 2Kings 2. This is a fascinating account of two men who were righteous in God’s eyes, and were true prophets for His Word. We also discussed the relevance of prophets today and how important good role-models and firm beliefs are.
