What Went Down–15 August 2010

If you’d like to see the framework slideshow we discussed, click the link to download the PPT file: Love: Us vs God [clean].

Today we discussed how both the world and God sees love, and, after watching this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M2LhI-RLX84 we realized that the world has a very warped idea of love, and how to deal with it.

The emotions that came through from the Eminem/Rihanna video were mostly of anger, hatred and most of all, deceit. We discussed how the world sees relationships and how to build on them, and then read this passage from 1 Corinthians about God’s views on love.

That passage was so different to what came out in the first video, a point which we chatted about, plus how we know if God is speaking to us of our relationships and how we can prevent ourselves from being taken for a ride by someone we care about; all of this is easier with God’s guidance!

Discuss the slideshow with family and friends, feel free to use it and think about the world vs God when it comes to love!

What Went Down–14 March 2010

Actually, not much went down, but it was just Alex and myself, and since Alex felt we’d all been quite busy in youth recently, we sat down to take a look at the Bible software I recently got: Glo Bible. Check out their site under “Software Highlights” in “Extra Stuff” on our site.

This is a truly amazing piece of computer software, and, although requiring a fairly hefty PC to run, is well worth the effort. Everything in the software, all 3600-odd pieces of media, articles, interactive documentaries, notes and references, are cross-related and deep-zoomable: your scroll wheel on your mouse moves deeper into all the features. It really brings the Bible to life, and allows you to take virtual tours of the Holy Land as it is today, and as it was in Jesus’ time; you can really imagine Jesus living there and performing His miracles and the like!

Glo allows you to create customizeable reading plans relating to anything within the Bible, allows you to search verses and find out where they took place, when, and how these relate to your personal life with Glo’s 6 lenses: Media, Bible, Topical, MyGlo, Atlas and Timeline. For example, you find topic called “Sin” in the Topical Lens. Next you can select it and send it to the Bible lens, which will show you all the verses and sections in the Bible relating to sin. You can send it to the Timeline Lens, and all the times that Sin is mentioned in the Bible according to when it was mentioned, will display. Then you can send it to Media and see pictures and art as well as Encyclopaedia, web links and definitinos for the search. Along with it’s comprehensive study notes for NIV, Glo also features a “My Notes” sectin, allowing you to write your own notes about verses or sections in the Bible to be shown in your “MyGlo” lens.

Yes, it’s possible more expensive than some would like, (R800) huge in size (18GB, 3x 4.7GB DVD’s) and yes, it eats cap [Internet bandwidth] (400MB on first install and +- 50MB with monthly updates) and yes it needs a beefy PC (1GB RAM, Core 2 Duo Processor) but in the end it is thouroughly worth  it, and really allows you to understand the Bible, and be immersed in the world in which Jesus Himself lived. It’s not just a study resource, its a journey and an exploration, and I am thoroughly enjoying having it: highly recommended!

2010 1st sessions (AKA What Went Down–17 January 2010)

Greetings to all, and once again sorry for the back post…

The year kicked off on a somewhat calm note, with just Chris, Jess, Alex and myself turning up for the first session of youth for the year. Deciding that the coffee would be in closer proximity if we sat in the hall (with the New Year and change in ministers the wish-list for the youth will probably only be put into action next week, and that’s meaning the electricity arrangements and the like) we duly took seats for a session focusing on people in the Bible. We plan to go through the Life Application Bible looking at the profilesa of meaningful people mentioned in the bible in order to learn from their strenghts and weaknesses, and to apply these principles to our own lives.

Today was Ruth, where we looked at how a Moabite woman whose husband died took the hard way, and instead of returning to her husband’s family, continued with her widowed mother to Isreal, where Naomi had a relative named Boaz. As they arrived it turned out that it was barley-harvesting time was happening, and, as Ruth and Naomi were very poor, they gleaned behind the harvesters, in this case from Boaz’s field. Because Boaz was a Godly man, he told the harvesters to drfop a little bit of extra barley for Ruth, as well as to leave her alone. (Gleaners were often hassled by the harvesters) As Boaz and Ruth were related, she asked him to be her kinsman-redeemer. (a system where a widow can marry her closest relative after her husband’s death) Boaz was happy to oblige but then it appeared he wasn’t the closest relative. So then he asked whether this kinsman wanted the land he could claim legally. He agreed, but Boaz added that he’d get the land and Ruth; at this the kinsman-redeemer disagreed, and Boaz, through doing the right thing in God’s eyes, married Ruth.

The worksheet we completed about this story will be up soon!

What went down: 31 May 2009

This is the last of the back posts, then we’ll be up-to-date!

Although we only had a few of us today, it didn’t mean that the discussion was any less interesting!

We continued with our Genesis discussion, delving into Adam and Eve, the original meanings of the names, and the the actual location of the garden of Eden.( judging by the 4 rivers described in the Bible and actual evidence of these today) We frequently stopped and co-related the things in Genesis to elsewhere in the Bible, also discovering just how cross-referenced it is!!

You can see the text and notes we used in our discussion by clicking here.

Catch up with us again next week as we continue our journey through the Bible!
