What Went Down – 18 March

True U Lesson 8 – DNA by design part 4

It is impossible that chance forms part of our DNA structure!

- The return of the God Hypothesis -

Psalm 111:4 – “He has caused his wonders to be remembered; the LORD is gracious and compassionate.”

  • Thesis

Theism – with its affirmation of a transcendent, powerful and intelligent

Creator – provides the best explanation of the key evidences concerning the origin of the universe and life.

Code is critical for information

Information is the product of intelligent information

What’s Coming Up…

Sunday the 18th of March sees our last youth for the term!

We will start today in the Church until the Kids Story then Sue will take youth!

Sunday the 25th of March, 1st of April and 8th of April (Easter Sunday); there will be no youth!

What Went Down – 4 March 2012

Today we continued with DNA to explain the origin of life.

The focus was on scientists’ materialistic view as an explanation.

  • The origin of information – we used the explanation of CHANCE.
  • Some scientists believe that DNA rose by chance.
  • They say amino acids form proteins by chance.
  • Stephen Meyer used a demonstration of the students taking scrabble letters; they then had to write their letter on the board to see if they could spell a word.  As you can imagine, they did not spell a word.
  • He then took a combination lock with 10 digits and 4 dials the odds were 10 to the power of 4 (which equalled 10 000) that they could crack the code on the first attempt.
  • If you took a 10 digit and 10 dial combination lock the odds would then change to 10 to the power of 10 (100 000 000 000).
  • The point of the combination locks is that the more variables you have the greater the CHANCE of ‘cracking the code’ the first time.
  • The amino acids which make up proteins have hundreds of combinations to make a protein.
  • It takes 3 amino acids to make one protein molecule.
  • A critical question  by Doug Axe
  • “How common (or rare) are functional sequences (i.e., proteins) among all the possible combinations of amino acids?”
  • 150 amino acids long have the odds of 10 to the power of 74 of forming a functional protein.
  • There are left and right-handed amino acids.  Only left-handed amino acids can create a functional protein.
  • He did a lot of maths and came to the answer that 10 to the power 164 is the chance of creating a functional protein.
  • Chance is not a good hypothesis.
  • You can’t get information unless you already have information, which is the problem with prebiotic natural selection.
  • Prebiotic natural selection needed to start with information.
  • Undirected information -
  • NaCl – Salt is an example of two different molecules that join because of the positive and negative charges.
  • “There is no naturalistic explanation for the origin of the information that you need to build the first life”

What Went Down – 19th February

Deism and Theism are left as competitors as the right world view

We now move onto DNA and the coding of DNA in the human body.

  • Biological Evolution – explains how you get from simple pre-existing forms of life to more complex forms of life.
  • Chemical Evolution – explains how you get to the first cell
  • Amino Acids are the building blocks for proteins.
  • Amino Acids are used to form proteins.  Chance can’t create them as their shape determines their function.
  • The function of the whole depends on the arrangement of these parts
  • Francois Crick determined that DNA has 4 different “DNA bases”.  Adenine, Cytosine, Guinean, and Thymine.  They are the ‘filing cabinets’ of a cell which then tell the cell how to perform and how to create a new cell.
  • The information in DNA has a meaning
  • What’s the fundamental mystery of life?
    • The origin of information.
    • Specified information,
    • Functional information.
  • Has this appearance of design been explained away by any undirected process
  • The only source of specified information is by an intelligent design.

What Went Down – 29 January 2012

Today was Sue’s first lesson of the year!  She did a quick recap of what we have learned so far in the Youth version of The Truth Project called TrueU.

World view review:

Theism – God made the world and he upholds it and is active in it.

Deism – There is a God who created the world and he is out there somewhere, not involved.

Naturalism – No God -> The Big Bang theory.

Pantheism – He is in the world, in the table, in you, the tree.  God can be anything you want him to be.

She asked us why is it important that we know these world views?

- So we can know what not to believe.

Can we prove that God created the Heavens and The Earth?

No.  That is why people are trying to prove he did not and why we need to have faith.

The Lesson:

The Big Bang Cosmology:

  • There has to be a beginning.
  • Some scientists did not like the fact that there was a beginning, a time when the world was created, because there would have to be something or Someone who created it.
  • The Big Bang theory states that ‘as the world expands things pop into existence’, maintaining the density.

The Oscillating universe:

  • Says that the universe is expanding and contracting, it will expand and then the gravitational pull will cause the earth to re-collapse!
  • Scientists have said the earth is expanding but rapidly increasing in its rate.
  • Stephen Meyer asked “what matter can you fit into an area of zero volume?”
  • creatio ex nihilo – The universe was created out of NOTHING physical.

Materialism:

Matter is the thing from which everything comes.

  • The “Big Bang” is not a causal theory.
  • The “Big Bang” and Christianity both say there was a beginning and that is where people often make the mistake about Christianity.
  • The ‘others’ says that the World always was and will always be.
  • “If you’re talking about the origin of space and time it’s self, you need something that exists outside of space and time”!
  • What’s the big deal with the “Big Bang”?
“Why is the evidence of a finite universe so unsettling to someone who holds a materialistic worldview?”  -> There IS a God!

Einstein, towards the end of his life said his theory was wrong;

Hoil, towards the end of his life said his theory was wrong;

Darwin, towards the end of his life said his theory was wrong.

“If theism and the Judeo-Christian view of creation are true, then we have reason to expect evidence of a finite universe.

We have evidence of a finite universe.  Therefore, we have a reason to think that theism and the Judeo-Christian view of creation may be true.”  -> The confirmation of a hypothesis.

  • Titus 1:2 says “in the hope of eternal life, which God, who does not lie, promised before the beginning of time,”.
  • Pantheism:

- No matter

- No God

Therefore:

- No God

- No Matter

  • “What is the thing from which everything else comes?”
